Our Education Program
Understanding that the planet’s health is inextricably linked to human health is, at its core, an education challenge. Our Planetary Health education program is working to ensure that all JHU graduates, regardless of school or division, graduate understanding the urgency of acting on the Planetary Health crisis and how to connect their disciplines to Planetary Health. JHIPH’s education program facilitates the integration of Planetary Health teaching across the University by providing individualized support to interested faculty, developing tools for incorporating Planetary Health into curricula, collaborating with the Planetary Health Alliance on education initiatives, and forthcoming publications on Planetary Health education competencies.

Our Goal
All Johns Hopkins graduates understand the urgency of acting on the Planetary Health crisis through the integration of its principles into teaching across the University.

Planetary Health Education at JHU
Introductory Course & Micro-credentials
As we expand Planetary Health education across all JHU schools and divisions, the Education Program is developing an introductory Planetary Health course available to all students across the university. The course will be offered in person at Homewood for undergraduate students, with a hybrid option available for graduate students across all divisions. This course will provide a strong interdisciplinary foundation, demonstrating how students from any field can contribute to advancing solutions in Planetary Health.
In parallel, we are beginning to design Planetary Health micro-credentials for students, and potentially faculty, to further deepen engagement and build institutional capacity. These early-stage initiatives represent an exciting evolution of Planetary Health education at Johns Hopkins.
University-wide Course Landscape Analysis and Course Integration
In its first year, the Education Program conducted a university-wide assessment to establish a baseline of Planetary Health education across Johns Hopkins. Through a systematic review of over 10,000 courses, we identified those directly aligned with, adjacent to, or showing strong potential for integration of Planetary Health concepts.
There is an increasing number of available courses addressing different components of Planetary Health for different student audiences. We continue to refine our assessment process by strengthening our data methods and developing a dynamic dashboard to track trends and visualize growth over time. As we collaborate with more faculty, additional courses are incorporated into the analysis, allowing us to assess progress, identify gaps, and measure the expansion of Planetary Health education across the university over time.
